Did You Know... ... Young workers are more likely to have a workplace accident in their first six months of working, than in the rest of their working life. They tend to be new to the workplace and therefore face unfamiliar risks. Having strong policies and procedures in place will give not only your young workers, but all of your employees, the right guidance and support to reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace.
Guidance on Protecting Young Workers
Employing people under the age of 18 means that you have the same responsibilities for their health, safety and welfare as you do for your other workers.
Young workers can also fit into the vulnerable worker category. This is because they may lack experience, be unaware of how to raise concerns or lack maturity.
It is imperative to give young workers clear and adequate instruction, training and supervision. As their employer, it is your responsibility to ensure they understand the importance of health and safety, enabling them to work without putting themselves or other employees at risk. It is worth noting that they may need additional support and supervision.
Your health and safety representative can play a vital role in young workers settling in to their new surroundings and responsibilities safely. They can introduce them to the workplace, remain involved with their training and provide feedback on any concerns or additional training needs.
