Employee absence is unavoidable and whilst there are good reasons for the employee away from work, it can go from being a minor inconvenience to a major issue. Whether you like it or not, it’s something with a workforce you have to face and manage, particularly at the moment.
Here’s our top 7 tips:
Make sure you have a Sickness Policy in place (if you don’t have a Sickness Policy in place, get in touch and we can support you with this) and who they should report to.
Carry out Return to Work interviews for employees who have been off sick. This allows you to monitor absence and understand patterns.
Consider whether the employee is disabled and where needed, obtain medical advice.
Remember your obligations under the Equality Act 2010.
Consider the impact on your other employees.
Make sure you have all the facts before considering dismissal and take legal advice if you are unsure.
Consider having other options in place: duvet days, flexible working, mental health days.
